I know the blogosphere is already overflowing with such a topic, but heck I care.
He's done so much to redefine the image of my country to the rest of the world.
Hail him, the Philippine National Fist (Pambansang Kamao), who, according to Dan Wetzel, "systematically demolished" the face of Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto in yesterday's fight.
Look at the pics below and see how much of Cotto's physique was demolished:
This is like a 'kamikaze effect'. Cotto and Pacquiao's fists met in mid-air swing.
Cotto spread-eagled after an out-of-the-blue power punch from the Filipino pride.
There you go, Cotto!
And finally, on the12th round, the referee stopped the fight as Cotto was already "incapacitated." Only sheer will pushed him to pretend he could still stand up.
The judges' verdict: TKO. It was a record-breaking win. Manny Pacquiao held titles in seven weight divisions. This was a feat not even Oscar de la Hoya or Muhammad Ali or self-proclaimed pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. accomplished.
At least my countrymen have something to smile about. Seeing victory claimed by a kababayan in the international boxing sport is a panacea for the disaster-ridden Philippines. Manny Pacquiao has fulfilled the promise he wasn't able to keep in his fight with Ricky Hatton: it was a fight that every Filipino enjoyed. He really squeezed the last drop of rounds. That's how good Pacquiao is. He can manipulate the flow of the fight. There's a bonus, however. Other races enjoyed the fight just as much as we did. Beyonce's hubby, Jay-Z, even made special mention of Pacquiao in his rap-song. That was Capital Cool. It makes the world forget that the Philippines houses Muslim insurgents.
Celebrating 'good times'
So, Floyd Mayweather, Sr. and Jr. Hope you two are up for it.
Despite your "sore loser" tantrums, you have yet to prove your literary assertions of "boxing prowess" inside the ring itself and with the pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao in it!
P.S.
Get well soon Cotto. I really have nothing against you but I'll always cheer for my Filipino brethren.
More importantly, I pray he recovers. In the undercard fights, Z Gorres was proclaimed winner by unanimous decision but he collapsed thereafter and went into coma. The back part of his brain, probably around the medulla oblangata area, was hemorrhaging. Doctors said that he might not be able to pursue boxing after he wakes up.
Sigh. I'm sad.
What a high price to pay for such rare victory.
What a high price to pay for such rare victory.
Still, it's a paradox. I'm happy that Pacman won.
